Burberry trademarked its plaid pattern, known as the Nova Check, as an interior lining for its famous trench coats in 1921. Tartan-inspired, it consisted of intersecting lines, which were traditionally black, red, and white atop a beige background. Since, the Nova Check has been released in a variety of color schemes and on a range of products.
Due to its overuse and predominance in the counterfeit market, the Nova Check waned in popularity in the early- ‘00s. It almost entirely disappeared from Burberry’s catwalks and campaigns until Spring/Summer 2018, when Christopher Bailey re-imagined it one last time for his final collection. In celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, Bailey sent models down the runway in a new rainbow plaid.
With the continued nostalgia for ‘90s styles and popularity of streetwear, Burberry’s Nova Check is again in demand. Want to get the look for less?
