Alessandro Michele has stated, “I am not interested in the future – it doesn’t exist yet – but I am really interested in the past and the contemporary.” Since Michele was appointed creative director at Gucci, he has become famous for mixing the old with the new. He has delved into the house’s archives, re-interpreting its historic codes in a more modern way. 

For his Spring/Summer 2016 collection, Alessandro Michele re-imagined a bag silhouette that was originally released in 1969. Known as the Gucci Sylvie Bag, it has the same boxy shape and slightly rounded corners; however, a gold-toned chain and buckle closure now overlay the Web ribbon that is fitted to its flap. The Gucci Sylvie Bag can still be carried by its structured top handle, but it also features a detachable leather strap, which can be alternated with a grosgrain cord. 

Since, Gucci Sylvie has expanded from one bag to an entire line, including shoulder bag, mini, super mini, and wallet styles. While each is sized and shaped differently and the house’s iconic Web is missing on some, all of them are detailed with the chunky hardware. This has become the distinctive element of the Gucci Sylvie collection.
